There are two things that often cause hard shifting when cold:
1) the clutch isn't disengaging. start the car and keep the driver's
door open. you should be able to hear the transmission turning.
depress the clutch pedal. you should hear the transmission spin
down. if it doesn't spin down, it will be hard to shift.
2) sometimes the shifter mounts break, get loose, or get out of
alignment. this also causes hard shifting, especially when cold.
make sure the shifter console is properly attached and aligned to the
transmission.
