According to a well-respected dealer in San Francisco, who did my 6-disc
changer installation in my '81 320i, an in-dash CD head unit is not
recommended because the anti-shock mechanism is designed to deal with
vertical motions. Mounting a CD head unit vertically would change the
orientation of the mechanism, and its performance against "horizontal" shock
(from it's frame of reference) is most likely not ideal. He gave me the
opportunity to try it out and if I didn't like it, he was willing to swap it
out for a different unit. Instead I just went all out and got a Sony ES
CDR-520 deck with changer controls along with the Sony ES 6-disc changer.
Great sound, especially with the tweeters he installed along with the
system. Hope this helps.
