Well, boys and girls, contrary to the experiences some of you are relating,
here in the Greater Kansas City metroplex, auto fatalities are
skyrocketing. For weeks, the local tabloid has quoted the various
gendarmeries as attributing the out-of-control death toll to the higher
speed limits forced upon an unwitting driving public by a few maniacal car
nuts. Finally in today's edition, a causal factor that seem to to be closer
to the truth was revealed. So far during 1996, 95% of the people killed in
car crashes were not wearing seat belts. In previous years, only 50% of
fatalities were unbelted. This year, in fact, many fatalities are occurring
at lower speeds.
If Charles Darwin were alive today, I think he'd be shooting us a big "I
told you so!" It seems that no matter how closely we try to legislate and
regulate safety, a goodly portion of this country's knuckleheads are just
plain determined to take themselves out of the gene pool. And while part of
me feels for their families and regrets the financial and emotional cost to
society, another part of me just wants to wish these boneheads "Bon
vyoage," and hope they didn't take some unfortunate innocent souls with
them.
