e28 fuel tank size / mileage

Being a new owner deprived of an owner's manual I turn to the collective
knowledge of this mailing list.  I have an '86 535i.  What size is the fuel
tank and what sort of mileage do other owners of this model get?  Whenever
my gas gauge shows empty, it only takes about 11 gallons of fuel to fill.  I
have gotten about 20 mpg for my last 2 fill-ups which only gives me a range
of about 220 miles.  This seems very short for a sport/touring car of this
sort so I suspect my gauge is lying to me.  I also checked via the
"undocumented" 1000+1 on the computer which shows 49 liters with a full
tank.  I can go further on a tank of gas on my Yamaha FJ1100!  Seems odd
that my sport/touring bike would have longer range than my car.  TIA.

I believe my '85 FJ1100 is also faster than any street legal BMW or Nissan
but not as fast as Jay's ZX9R :)
