<misc> catastrophic battery failure?

Dear Bimmer gods

Just walked back from ground zero, where the '88 E28 died.  Actually, I
entered the OBC code and turned the key, only to hear a strong pop, and
then, no power at all.  Saw some smoke coming out of the hood from around
the battery.

A few questions for the digest:

What are the other possible causes for a pop and no electrical?

And if it is the battery melting down, can I expect other components to be
damaged by the battery's death scream (relays, fuses)?

Plus, any body have the correct replacement battery size?
