Nope, just lubrication. It's part of the BMW service that
aftermarket shops and DIYers usually leave out. This is the
result. At this point just squirting some graphite into the key
slot may or may not help. If not you will have to pull out the
cylinder and work it in. While you have it out you may want to
clean the cylinder well with a cleaner that will evaporate off. If
you use an oil, it will stay on the small parts and attract dirt to
cause problems later. Clean it as best you can, work graphite into
it as best you can and it should work smoothly.
To prevent this just spray some graphite or lock lubricant into the
key slot periodically. Don't forget the trunk and glove box
mechanism while you are at it!
