reply: Benefit of thermostat removal
Hey hoodsup@domain.elided, I've been working on cooling problems for awhile
with my 320i's and have been reading alot. It seems pulling the
thermostat will reduce the engine temp when it is cooler outside; I've
seen some chevy V8's running at 130 to 140 deg. F without their
thermostats. The drawbacks are increased cylinder wall/ ring wear and
the motor oil develops some different forms of breakdown. Motor oil
needs to bake at a higher temperature to burn off moisture - if it
doesn't burn off, it starts to chemically react and reduces the life of
the oil. Another drawback is all the thermoelectric sensors for the fuel
injection need to come up to temp to provide the proper fuel mixture.
Some sensors on some fuel injection systems will provide a skewed
mixture if the engine doesn reach the thermostat temperature.
