This also happened to me; at least something similar.  My fuel gauge
once appeared to be inoperable. I also ran the usual checks then
*re-booting* (re-starting) my car.  The fuel gauge did not reset.
This my next response was to simply (this might sound stupid) tap on
the gauge.  Success at last!  The needle snapped back to the correct
position and I was a happy camper.  As dum as it may seem you might
want to try this method.
