Catalytic Converters

I've read and heard about the degradation of performance when a converter is
restricting the flow of exhaust gases. When I asked a shop how to determine
if a converter is bad or not, the response I received was to knock on it to
determine if it was internally broken. If there were no sounds of broken
pieces, then it is assumed that the converter is healthy. Isn't there a
procedure or some sort of a test to verify proper flow through the exhaust
system?

Thanks in advance.
