Broken elec. seat

I'm new here, having recently bought a beautiful 1984 633CSi. However, 
my lovely car has a problem. The driver's seat (electric) doesn't have 
its full travel forward and back. Instead, it only moves a few inches 
forward and backward and seems to twist slightly from R to L as it does 
so. All of the other power adjustments work just fine. I encountered 
this problem in two '88 7ers I looked at as well. Is this a common 
problem? Is there a common fix? I'd be interested to hear others' 
experiences.
