I think you got hydro-locked!  If you sucked enough water in through the
intake to fill up (some) cylinders, the ones on the compression stroke would
have no way to compress the water - hence lockup.  No way will you  turn that
crank.

I don't know if there is usually collateral damage - maybe bent valves?
 Probably someone else on the list will know.

By the way, this was the subject of a "Puzzler" on "Car Talk" once.
