Both 16" and 17" will fit.

I run 16x7.5 with 225/45-ZR16 on my M3.
I'm running the TWS, EVO wheel which is 7 spoke with a 

big red hex nut.  TSW makes about 3 different types of
wheels in 16" and 17" sizes that will fit an M3.

You can put 17" on the E30.  THe maximum size rim is a 7.5-8 up front
and a 8.5-9 in the rear.  I have a friend running 7.5 front, 8.5 rear
with 215/40 (I think up front) and 235/40 (in the rear) on 17" rims.
