It's supposed to mean that the pad lining thickness has been reduced to less
than specified. In the case of my 1980 320i, it means that I just drove
over a bump. Happens about 20% of the bumps I have to drive over. If I
jiggle the speedo console a bit, it goes back out. Brake pad linings
exceed spec...
