Sumitomo Tires
Thanks for the info on Sumitomo tires. I decided to order them (I was
undecided on the Yokohamas AVS, Pirelli P700z, or the Dunlop SP 8000's) from
the tire rack. I wanted the Dunlop D40/M2's, but they didn't come in
225/45-16. When Dave, the guy who helped me out, told me the Sumitomo HTRZ's
are comparable to the D40/M2's so I decided to buy 'em (even has the same
tread patterns). I'll be getting them next week and let you guys know how
they compare to the P700z's. Anyways, Sumitomo owns Dunlop or Dunlop is a
subsidiary of Sumitomo so I figured they can't be bad (unless I'm really into
name brands, but that's another story (ie: marketing)). They sound like great
tires for the value. Sumitomo are probably one of the best hidden secrets if
they turn out to be as good as I think they are.
Everyone on this list who commented on the Sumitomo were very pleased with them.
Not one person told me to say away from 'em.

Sumitomo is better known by the tradename they use in most of the world -
Dunlop. I've found the HTR "H" to compare well with other H rated tires, and
I suspect that it is similar to the Dunlop D80A2. I'm anxious to hear if
anyone responds to the previous poster's request for information on the
HTRZ. The Sumi's are a great value.

I'm running Sumitomo Z rated tires on my E30 M3.
They are 225/45-16.
I don't have the model handy.
It sticks is dry and doesn't slide when we and cost $150
each.

I used Sumitomo H series tires on my E28 535i. They cost me only $75 ( a few
years ago, from Exotic Wheel and Tire in Fla.). They were a vast improvement
over the stock TRX's, especially in the rain, and cost only half as much. In
fact, I bought some nice 5 spoke ATS alloys plus the Sumi's for the same price
as new TRX's would have cost.
The Sumi's handled very well, and gave me about 35,000 miles of life.

I just put a set of Sumitomo HTR4s on my GTI (185-60HR14). I'm very happy
with them both in the wet and dry. I think they're better than the Pirelli
P600s I had before. Also, they are noticeably quieter. Their innovative
feature is a continuous steel belt instead of the typical 45-degree
joint---should be quieter and smoother. The HTR4 is M+S rated, but it
hasn't snowed here in Boston yet :-) so I don't know how they'll be, but
they handle a *lot* of wetness with no problem. The guy I bought them from
said they're supposed to last 60K miles, but we'll wait and see (treadwear
260). They handle great, I can't imagine it would be worth spending a
whole lot more, HR is fine for me. BTW, I think Sumitomo owns Dunlop.
[Note: The HTRZ's are better than HTR4's]

If sumitomo tires are compariable to the D40/M2's, the Sumitomo's must
be pretty good overall.
Modern Motor is an Australian magazine. In Oct '91 they did a
serious performance tyre test. They did the following tests (the
car was a Nissan 300ZX, 225/50ZR16 tyres): Dry G Readings, Dry
Circut Times, Slalom Times, Braking Distance, Noise Readings, Wet
G-Force, Wet Circut Times.
Final rangings were:
