'86 325es check engine light

Hi,
  I'm looking at an '86 325es to purchase.  The car is in very good shape
with 89k on the clock but the "check engine" light is on.  I referenced
Bentley on the meaning but it only defines the flashing codes for the 
325i.

Can anyone shed light on the causes of the check engine light being on?

Also does anyone have a good idea of what the 325es should cost?
