2nd RFD: rec.autos.makers.bmw

For the information of the members of the bmw-digest. This just appeared
in news.announce.newgroups on the net:

Request for Discussion

Unmoderated group:

   rec.autos.makers.bmw

Charters:

rec.autos.makers.bmw is for discussion of cars made by BMW AG.
Discussion of other relevant marques such as Bristol, Borgward
and EMW, and autos using BMW engines such as certain Brabhams
would also be considered reasonable.

Names:

The original intent was to create rec.autos.bmw; it was recommended
to me by the members of the "group advice" list that the sub-hierarchy
rec.autos.makers be used instead. This concept, which appeared at
the time of the first RFD, was controversial at first, but as two other
groups have now been created under the rec.autos.makers hierarchy, it
is clear that this group should also go there.

Background:

The bmw mailing list is now more than 5 years old; membership in the
bmw list is over 600. Traffic is heavy, and and demand is more than
adequately proven. The orientation of the group is presently towards
owners who take a serious interest in maintaining their own vehicles.

The plan is to provide a newsgroup which will be bidirectionally
gatewayed to a digested version of the mailing list. This will
reduce the load on the mailing list while at the same time providing
access for those who do not receive news. This gateway will be
provisonal; if conditions render the gateway untenable, it will be
dropped.

This RFD is being sent to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
rec.autos.misc, rec.autos.driving, rec.autos.sport.misc, and
rec.autos.tech. This (and any subsequent) RFD and the Call for
Votes will also be sent to the bmw mailing list, as this
proposal would have a significant impact on the future of that list.

Followups are directed to news.groups, and any subsequent discussion
should take place there.
