I'd recommend against cutting the door panels as they are very difficult to
find for the early 2002s. If you decide to do so, e-mail me as I have a
set of good black ones with holes for speakers that I would love to trade
as part of a deal for yours (if they are black)
That said, I haven't seen an installation of front speakers in a 2002 that
provides sound quality that justifies cutting good panels (either in the
doors, the front kick panel or under the dash). I guess it depends on your
priorities.
Finally, does anyone have/know of a set of underdash panels for a '72 2002
that are in new/very good condition. I need pretty much everything except
the pad that bolts under the steering column. Any help appreciated.
