Heated seat questions

I have some questions about heated seats specificlly the ones in my 88 M5.
 They have 2 heat settings, & I am trying to tell whether they are working
properly - both seats at both settings. 

1)  Is there a weight switch/interlock to prevent them from operating on an
empty seat?
2) Do the seat backs have heating elements?  If so, do they work on both the
high and low settings?
3) Why the hell did BMW put the heat switches on E28s on the console behind
the line of sight of the driver?     :-)
