86 325es auto transmission whine

No, I'm not whining about my transmission. It's the transmission that is 
making a whining noise. At about 65-75mph, the automatic transmission in
direct drive mode generates an annoying hum/whine. It peaks at about 70mph
and diminishes below 65 and greater than 75mph. I have 100K miles (2nd owner)
on this car. I sense that the sound is from the final rear differencial(sp).
Could it be that the previous owner (high mileage) has created a "worn"
spot at the 70mph range? Or the problem stemming from U-joints on the drive
train or cv-joints? Does anyone have this similar problem?
