Over heating

I was just reported by my wife that the '87 535is she took to
work overheated (when I parked the car there was smoking coming
out from under the hood and the temp needle was all the way to
          the right!!).

I hope no serious damage is done! However since she did not get a
low coolent warning light, I am guessing there was some thing
else which caused the overhead rather than low coolent. What
          could it be?

The car has about 78k miles. Is it that I need to change water
pump, thermostat, etc ? How do I know what was the cause of this
          overheating?

          Thanks.
