[bmw] windshield gasket advice

Chip in my 1988 528e's windshield turned into three-inch-long crack from
windshield base, turned into nine-inch-long arc running back to bottom of
windshield... so it's time to replace.

Am probably the fourth owner, and believe this is the original windshield --
is there a way to tell?  Anybody have any tips on how to determine whether
gasket is fine vs. in need of replacement?
