[bmw] e28 idle surge

My '85 528e (224 kmi, 30+ mpg, 1 quart every 5 kmi, original clutch) has 
developed a regular habit of surging at idle up to perhaps 1200 rpm, dropping 
back to 700 or so, then back up.

When I open the hood to try to fix this, what should I be prepared to do?

As an infrequent mechanic, I do not have any repair manuals for this vehicle.
