E34 Erratic Starting Issue

The symptoms you describe are consistent with a fairly common problem in the
E34 model.  The starter relay may have an intermittent short when one of the
soldered joints develops a hairline crack.  This happened to my 5er.  The
solution was to replace the relay located in the engine compartment fuse
box.
