re: //M3 putt putt sound

re: //M3 putt putt sound, and chirpy sound:

If your putt putt sound is the same as my putt putt sound, then here's what causes it:

There is a vapor recirc. valve located toward the front of the exhaust manifold. There is an electrical conenctor with a squared off dome lid on the connector about 1 inch long. The valve sits in front of the throttle, next to the mass air sensor.
The putt is apparently pulses of vapor recirculation being fed to the idel control valve thorugh an ~1/2 hose that is on the bottom of the vapor recirc. valve.
My '97 has been making that sound ever since it was new, is normal, and is not of concern.

The chirp sound sounds like you may wish to replace your belts. If they have never been changed, then at 58k miles they ought to be.

Btw another predicted wtf sound the E36 //M3 makes is a hissy growl for a few minutes when starting a cold engine. That is the Air Pump feeding air into exhaust manifold.
