Some people throw the O-rings away and use only sealant.  If you use a good
quality product there's no reason it won't work.  The bottom of the liner
doesn't get particularly hot nor is it under a lot of pressure.

I haven't tried it myself but I'm assured there are no problems with liner
protrusion sans o-ring.
