[alfa] Reproduction grills
I just received a reproduction grill for a client's '69 Spider (what
else) from one of the Digest's advertisers. I will say from behind it
looks rather hand made (which I'm sure it was) but looks great from the
outside. I personally feel it could use a bit more polish on the outside
frame, but fortunately they polished the vertical slats before welding
them on.
I got an estimate to straighten / polish the original and it was not all
that far from purchasing a new one. I have no doubt the old one would
look darn good once repaired although there might be a few waves in it.
It also doesn't mean the rear edge which goes against the body would be
perfectly even. Consequently the bodywork would also have to be made to
fit.
Since chroming and stainless repair is running over four months to get
back, I would have to hold off until it was repaired to make sure
everything lined up perfectly. I'm purely speculating this grill was a
return since when ordering I was told the last one had just been sold,
then the computer told the salesman that one was in the warehouse.
Should that be the case, I would further speculate the buyer purchased
the grill after having bodywork done and (surprise, surprise) the grill
didn't fit.
Strongly suggest one consider a reproduction (except the plastic ones -
if they're still available) for the time / hassle saved and having one
available for the inevitable bodywork required for the front of your car
- especially those of the Spider variety.
Would have been neat if it had come with a black edging like the Series
4 Spider stainless headlight rims do.
No, I'm not getting a deep discount for this post, just pontificating.
