it's actually not spam fighting, it's borked MTA defense[1]
(as well as protection against novice digest members sending
complete digests back to the digest.)

i've been considering installing some content management software such
as phpnuke on the server, which might be contrived to allow for large
file/tech article/picture postings. i have another application for it, but once
it's on, it could well do this.

[1] there was a time when certain mail transport agents (MTAs)
would behave very badly with bounced email. the most
notorious product was the no longer sold or supported travesty
called MSMail, but it wasn't the only busted product on the
market back then. sometimes, when bouncing email, entire digests
would get mailed back to the digest, which would then be sent to
the bad email address, which would then be bounced....
this was particularly bad if it happened at about 6pm on a friday
evening, as it might not be spotted for a while.
