[alfa] Spider transmission noise
The 86 Graduate was running great after a recent rebuild and then a really bad
noise started coming from the transmission. It is a loud "rapapapah" that
syncs with input shaft rpm. The noise goes away (mostly) when the clutch is
depressed. Car is drivable in all gears. The noise starts at about 2000 rpm
in first and second and a little higher in the top three gears and returns
when you back off the gas (unload the engine).
I changed the trans oil when I before reinstalling the engine. The noise from
the transmission since then always seemed louder than before but not enough to
be concerned. Another factoid is that the clutch travel is less than before
leading me to wonder if something about the replacement block/crankshaft used
on rebuild was different enough to change the flywheel position relative to
the T/O bearing.
At any rate, I am suspecting one or more bearings on the input shaft. It's
cold here so I have to wait until a break in the weather to pull the
transmission. Anyone with similar experience or suggestions.
Thanks,
Don
