Re: [alfa] Car Audio Question

That's exactly what I'm doing in my car. I have a Denon 2 channel amp in my trunk running to two Alpine speakers in the original locations. Then I just have a little Radio Shack wire that comes out from under my carpet along the transmission tunnel. Until someone stole my CD player, I was running it to a cheapo Sony Discman. But when Santa/Chanukah Bob comes (don't know which friend is coming through for me) I plan on hooking it to my iPod. I've actually figured out a way to hide the Pod under the ashtray and have it totally disguised and hardwired, yet still removable for theft/portability reasons. Volume control is fine, only issue is fiddling with the voltage of the amp to find the best compromise between SQ and SPL (er... quality and volume for non-import tuner multiple subwoofer types). Without measuring, I think I'm somewhere around 3v. The only thing you have to be careful about is running a switch and remembering to turn the amp on and off (or tricking the power on to the ignition or some such idea... I'm gonna put pix on my site soonish, I'll mention it on the list..

There have been references in passing to hidden or secret car audio systems,
but nothing that's convinced me one way to go is the best. So how about
this:

What if I got a portable AM/FM/MP3 player, which range in size from Ipod size
to cell phone size, hard wire a power converter, and run a line from the ear
bud port to an inexpensive amplifier in the trunk, which would power the usual
in-door speakers?

The portable player becomes the head unit, it can hold 2-5 hrs of music, and
there's a radio, and I'd bet the audio quality will satisfy me -- I certainly
wouldn't want to drown out the exhaust sounds.

Will this work?
