[alfa] re: save those synchros

I completely agree, but why engage any gear? I don't want to wear out any
synchro before its time. I simply push the clutch all the way in, wait a few
seconds, then gently engage first. No reason you can't anticipate the
light. Never rush these gearboxes. Double clutching is a great way to save
synchros, and it sounds just delightful with our cars. It's nice to have the
shifter slide right into gear with nary a feeling.

One prevailing theory is that the synchros were fine when our transmissions
were born as 4 speeds, when they added the 5th gear on, the synchros weren't
quite up to the task of slowing the additional mass. Just do nice,
slower, 'LeMans' style shifts, pretend you're in a 24 hour race and the thing
has to last!

Second gear synchronizers work hard enough, use third gear when trying to
get to first from neutral.
