[alfa] To Spray or Not To Spray...

Doug Harris raises an interesting point - the growing appreciation for fine older cars with an irreplacable patina of age.

However, there is a difference between patina and wear. Doug's Spider sounds like an example of a car with nice patina, and it probably shouldn't be messed with. However, a lot of Alfas have been driven in less-than-ideal weather conditions, and it shows. Peeling clear coat, rust bubbles, and severe sun fade aren't getting much more appreciation, unfortunately. For a lot of cars, a respray is the last step in an automotive salvation, stopping rust before it becomes terminal.

Personally, if I had a car with original paint, no rust, and could make it fairly shiny with a weekend of polish, wax, and elbow grease, I'd probably leave it alone. However, if the car had rusty arches, peeling paint, and a few dents, I wouldn't feel the least bit guilty about getting it resprayed.
