RE: [alfa] Re: Transmission, bell housing sealants
I've used 2 types of sealant on Alfa transmission/transaxle housings in the
past..
Permatex "The Right Stuff" - this is great stuff, but not if you plan on
removing mated parts often. It's difficult to get mated parts apart.
HondaBond Ultra-Flange - in same type of dispenser as the Permatex, much
easier to remove, but seals un-gasketed joints equally as well. I've been
using HondaBond sealants for years on all cars and it seals great, is easy
to remove, easy to clean flanges once apart.
My recommendation is the Ultra-Flange (more experience with it)- you can
pick it up at any Honda parts counter.
Hope this helps.

Did mine this weekend and used Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket, part number
3D. This 16 oz plastic bottle has a cap/brush, it is a black gooey
tar-like consistency, and is applied to both mating surfaces. My bottle is
probably 20 years old - one container will last a lifetime for most non
professionals.
Use ~ 15 lbs of torque when assembling the transmission halves. Excessive
torque will squeeze the gasket sealer out from the joint.
