[alfa] 164 auto transmission not so auto? Help!

When it comes to transmissions I know little.  When
shifted manually, the transmission behaves, and shifts
well.  However, if I simply put it in "D" and go it
seems as if it skips a gear (the car bogs down). 
Another thing that happens when I start out from "D"
is that at about 40 mph, when it is getting ready to
shift into final gear, it quickly shifts to final
gear, then back down to 3, then back to final.  Once
speed is great enough, then it'll stay where it
should.
Any ideas?  Was my description clear enough.  Any
help's appreciated.
