I finally got the new Verde on the road this weekend.
The good: Tracks straight, much lighter clutch, much slicker gear
change, heater valve actually shuts off, wheels seem round.
The bad: Exhaust is a bit sloppy (same as before, I need to order some
better clamps, or weld in flanges.) Clunky suspension (f/r sway bar
bushings are shot as is the rear gearbox mount.) But most distressing
is a whine from the transaxle.
When I changed the gearbox lube, I found a lot of magnetic goo stuck to
the drain plug. On the road the whine is most noticable in 4th or 5th
gear on-throttle... off-throttle the whine mostly goes away.
Am I correct in guessing this whine/howl is from the crown & pinion
gears?
At this point I'm pretty tired of working on my Alfas... Is there
anyone out there rebuilding Transaxles? I'd gladly pay to have my old
TA rebuilt, and then swap it in.
