[alfa] RE: Master Cylinder Rebuild

I chose to address the corrosion issue in my Alfa hydraulic systems by
chemical plating with electroless nickel. Not applicable for ABS master
cylinders, proportioning valves, pumps or anything else that cannot be
disassembled or rebuilt but very satisfactory results achieved on
cylinders, lines (yes), and hardware. This process is commonly used in
the hydraulics industry to protect cylinder bores because, unlike
electroplating, it applies a uniform thickness coating inside and out.
Don't get any crazy ideas about plating engine liners; the rings will
never seat. If you choose this method, be sure to hone the cylinders
prior to plating and specify at least one hour tank time. The ultimate
I'm sure would be to replace the lines and re-core the cylinders with
stainless steel but I imagine that it would be expensive by comparison.
If I recall correctly, stainless steel brake calipers are available for
older Jaguars at about $600 each.
