[alfa] 164 starting problem

i think the deferred maintenence on the 164 is starting to catch up with
me.

background:

1991 164 base model, automatic

the water level sender has been non-functional since i bought the car, and
for the past several months has tended to seep around a bad o-ring. i've
been putting off replacing the overflow tank and the sender because it
hasn't been running too outrageously hot (stays below 200 in general.) i
was planning to take care of that before the first snowfall.

additionally, there's a big hole in the exhaust, another thing i'm planning
to fix before winter sets in and i put the GTV away (or sell it.)

so right now, the car is sitting at the local post office. i drove up, shut
it off (it was up to operating temperature on what passes for a warm day
here in september, about 70 or so degrees.) when i came back out, it didn't
want to start. it'd burble briefly (fuel + spark) and die. after it cooled
for about an hour, it'd start and idle badly for 10 seconds or so, then
die. hitting the throttle would just make it die quicker.

so what could it be? fuel filter? temp sender? something else?

(the idle compensator and AFM are used units i picked up from a fellow
digester last spring, they have been working well since i installed them.)

thanks in advance,
  richard
