Re: [alfa] Re: 164 up in flames , all safe, was : 164 cabin fuel vaporsmell

All,

Whilst enjoying a drive from Torino to Como on a warm Sunday and streching the legs of the
164, was passed (?) by a beautifully restored XK120, driven with some brio by an evidently
enthused owner.

(Thinks....shall I?...nah, let him enjoy the moment...)

Not two minutes later rounding a bend, said Jag sat billowing smoke from under the bonnet,
and owner now performing a Scots jig as interpreted into Italian.

I pulled over, unclipped the extinguisher from under my seat, ran back and poked it through
the grille/undertray and within say fifteen seconds, the smoke had subsided enough to pop
the bonnet, which then let out a short flame dealt with by another short blast.

Result - a charred engine bay, bad enough, but if you closed the bonnet, the rest of the car
was still in its pristine state, the owner explaining just the interior had cost four
thousand pounds from Connelly. The look on his face was gratitude enough.

So Peter's note on the loss of his 164 is a timely reminder that one of the best accessories
to obtain for any car is a multi class fire extinguisher. It may not save your vehicle, but
can buy precious seconds for its occupants. Cheap (life) insurance folks.
