I just had to replace a bent alternator pulley.  I had a bad alternator 
with a good pulley that I didn't want to damage, so I practiced on the 
bent one first.  Definitely resist all temptation to clamp the pulley.  
I bent it up pretty good and was unable to get the nut off.  I then 
used an air impact wrench and without any effort the nut came right 
off.  If you don't have one, I'm sure that if you took the alternator 
and a 1/2 inch drive socket to a tire store or service center they 
would do it for you.
