Re: 164 Electric Gremlins
My 164Q has 114,000 miles and the LCD is original (works perfect) and the
amp (I think) is fine, though every once in a while the radio interjects a
second of silence. I had the flasher unit go bad last month, but that
cannot be blamed on electrical.
Definitely stay away from Audi, as their electrical systems suck. My mom
just had a wiring harness fire on her 91 coupe, and the 4000 Quattro I owned
needed just about every electrical component replaced. Water cooler
discussions at work have yielded similar stories from total strangers on
their newer Audi cars.
I think we all agree that 164's are cool, whether 12 or 24 valve. I know I
will jinx myself on the electrical front here, but I have been pretty
impressed with my 24 valve's system to date.

P.S. Karl Robrock owns all types of 164's, we need him to chime in on the
relative reliabiity of 12 vs 24 valve...

ask alfa-bill, too, while yure at it. the electrics on the '94 & later
164's
are a *lot* more of a pita...

Doug, I'm gonna politely challenge you on this. I've never had an
electrical problem with my '95 164LS since I bought it new (except for the
LCD and the radio amp). The timing belt design sucks, though. It's always
had full scheduled maintanence from a very competent dealer and has always
passed California Smog by a wide margin.
I'd be interested to know what are the electrical weak points? I know
SubaruBill has mentioned that ECU's sometimes die, at great expense. What
else am I lucky enough to not have experienced?
