Spider 2nd gear grind and gear oil leaks- NEED ADVICE!

I am looking for adivce on my '73 Spider...

I have a mild grind on a fast shift into second gear.  I realize this is a 
chronic Alfa issue, but I have heard there are specific gear oils which help 
and keep the sychros working more smoothly.  Can anyone confirm?  What 
works?  Somewhere I heard that Shell Spirax gear oil works wonders or 
Redline.  Has anyone had success with these?

Also, I replaced the input seal on my differential recently and still have 
leakage.  The flange looked clean, with no wear.  I think I have synthetic 
gear oil in the differential and have heard rumors that synthetic leaks more 
than conventional oil.  Can anyone confirm?  Am I destined to live with 
leaks regardless of what I use?!
