Oils for High Mileage cars

Since nearly all of our cars qualify,  my ears perked up to a comment in the
recent "lubircants" discussion to wit"

(so called) oils for high mileage cars improve oil consumption.

If this is true, tell me more.  Why is this the case;  is this the experience
with other digesti; is there any compromise in the OEM oil requirement?
