Re: ATF in manual gearboxes

I am told that the reason for the switch to ATF is
that modern manual gearboxes (i.e. not the older Alfa
boxes), due to improvements in materials and machining
(CNC, etc.) that the tolerances of the new boxes are
so much tighter that the 80/90 oil used in the old
boxes is no longer good enough to provide proper
lubrication given the tighter tolerances. ATF is
synthetic, provides higher levels of detergent action,
is more heat tolerant, and flows better.

FWIW; A former Milano racer here in the Houston area
(klaus Jensen for those here who remember him)
switched his racing milano tranny to ATF because of
its heat tolerance and reduced friction.
