As far as I know you can disconnect and replace the battery without doing anything to the alarm system PROVIDED the alarm is not activated before you do so. Ensure the alarm is OFF by using the key fob remote. The the battery can be removed and replaced. The key for the alarm siren is there to allow the siren to be deactivated in case of a malfunction. The alarm system itself has an internal battery so it works if the battery cable is cut by a thief (or disconnected) but only if it is ON to begin with.
