Hi Brad!
The top of the boot goes in first held in place by the top end of the
metal strap retainer. Then the side with the spring clip to hold the 
leather in place while you press that side of the metal strap 
retainer in place. Finally, the other side of the strap retainer (with
the long fold-over) is pressed in place. I should mention that the
whole process requires EXTRA strong hands. Find an old farm boy like
myself who grew up milking cows by hand to help you if you can! Good
