Re Milano Shifter Oddness

There's a spring surrounding shifter rod inside the gearbox. The "tails" of
the spring butt up against a pin on the intermediate flange and provide the
left/right springiness of the shifter. I fear this may be your problem in
which case it's a bid job.

Has it lost its "spring" in both directions i.e., left and right?
