Lowering my Spider

I own a'89 Spider Grad, and I am considering lowering it.  I would like to know the pros and cons of lowering it.  Is it true the post '75 Alfa Spider's were raised to meet DOT requirements?  If I lower 1 inch or so will the sump be too low and get torn up from scraping the ground?  Any recommended manufacturer of springs for Alfa's?
