I agree with you about the condescending attitude displayed in Mr. 
Smith's comments, but I must say that I am one American car nut who 
simply does not understand NASCAR racing. Its not that the concept or 
the rules and strategies escape me, its simply that the point escapes 
me. Go fast and turn left? Where's the appeal in that? Add to that the 
fact that the cars look like American junker sedans yet have not one 
component in common with them (even the headlights are decals) and I 
fail to understand the fascination my fellow countrymen have with this 
particular form of racing. And while I'm sure that it's exciting and 
challenging to compete in these races; from a spectator point of view, 
It all seems so incredibly boring (unless there's a wreck - maybe 
that's the appeal, the old gladiator-like blood lust). I'm not knocking 
it, understand, I just don't understand the fascination. Now, if we 
were talking the European Touring Car Championships with Alfas racing 
all season, now THAT'S racing! :->
