Cam timing was 1750 cams



    George's comments illustrate the flexibility of timing the cams. I
would point out that the hotter a cam you use, the less leeway to
experiment with various settings. That drivabilty can be enhanced to
suit your own driving style but changing the timing will not give extra
lift or duration that most people beginning the journey on the road to
horsepower are seeking.

    And that tuning a carbed car is not the same as an injected one.
Remember venturies? How interesting were those dyno results that were
posted yesterday??

    My camshaft configuration gave horrible detonation with the intake
@102 but seems to work good at 106-108 (retarded-later valve closing)
and the exhaust retarded one hole to 99.
    Ex @114 (advanced-less overlap) gave slightly better drivability (ie
the flat spot under 2500), but detonation was still a problem. retarded
to 99 gave a smoother flat spot with better torque and reduced
detonation.
    My inclination today is, select a good advance curve, a hot intake
cam. Install @ 108 and advance it until it detonates (or 102, whichever
comes first) then back off one hole.

    Experiment at you own risk, but ALWAYS make sure that damn nut on
the front of the cam is TIGHT!
