Marvel Mystery Oil & Spica

As I understand it, the reasoning for using MMO in Spica-injected cars came about when new reformulated gasolines were introduced in several areas. There was concern that these new fuels could lack some of the lubricant properties that previous formulations offered. In the Spica injection pump, where the plungers are lubricated by fuel, anything that could potentially increase wear should be considered a Very Bad Thing.

Marvel Mystery Oil, it's thought, could add some lubrication properties to these new gasoline formulations and prolong the life of those delicate mechanical marvels - after all, MMO is commonly used to add some lubrication to unleaded gas for car designed for leaded - it's also used a lot in the aviation and marine field for the same reason. Bottom line, it *could* help, it surely won't hurt, and given the low cost of a quart of MMO, it probably not a bad idea.

As for Marvel Mystery Oil itself, as others have noted, it's been around forever. One reason is that, despite the hokey name, it really is a pretty effective product that doesn't make outrageous claims or boast about super high-tech wonder ingredients. The main components are naptha and wintergreen oil. In older engines, adding a quart of MMO to the crankcase helps remove sludge deposits; newer engines tend to run cleaner and MMO probably isn't needed.
