Subject: Alfa (Spider) main battery wire size

Anne O went into a great deal of detail some time ago regarding what
main battery wire to use (and not use) on one's Alfa.

She said, "Don't use welding wire, do use marine type wire."

I just received West Marine's catalog. While not critical at the moment,
I was wondering if the appropriate size is a #1 or a #2 (or?). The #1's
apparently come in 50' rolls only, whereas one can buy a 25' roll in #2.

Biba,
This is exactly what I used for my recent battery move from the engine
compartment. I thought I remembered that 1/0 was recommended, but it
looked like 'way overkill. The excellent salesman at North Portland West
Marine agreed, so at his recommendation I got 2/0 which is still
significantly larger than the stock '72 Spider cable. He cut it to my
specification and supplied high quality connectors. I don't recall the
exact cost, but cables and connections to install the battery behind the
passenger seat and run both pos and ground cables back to the engine was
about $50.

The marine quality stuff is superior in several ways to welding cable or
standard automotive stuff, as Anne O. detailed. I highly recommend it.

Cheers,
Joe
